Ultram is a synthetic (human-made) pain reliever (analgesic). Ultram is not a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID); therefore, it does not have an increased risk of stomach ulcers and intestinal bleeding that can occur with NSAIDs.
Doctors prescribe this medication to manage moderate to severe pain. You can use Ultram’s extended-release tablets for mild to moderately severe chronic pain in adults who need continuous treatment for an extensive period.
It would help if you did not use Ultram to treat pain in children younger than 12 years old and treat pain after surgery to eliminate the tonsils and adenoids in children below 18. Children between 12 and 18 who are overweight or have breathing difficulties such as severe lung disease or obstructive sleep apnea should not take Ultram.
